Privacy
Policy
How we handle personal information under Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). Last updated 2 July 2026.
Amber Otter Lane ("we", "us", "the lane") respects your privacy and is committed to protecting the personal information you share with us. This policy explains what we collect, why, how we look after it, and the rights you have under PIPEDA and applicable provincial privacy laws.
1. Who we are
Amber Otter Lane is an independent game-curation project operated from Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. For any privacy matter, our accountable contact is the Privacy Lead, reachable at the details in section 11.
2. The information we collect
We keep collection to a minimum and only gather what we genuinely need:
- Details you give us directly — when you join our newsletter ("the lane letter") you may provide your name, email address and, optionally, a phone number.
- Push-notification data — if you opt in to browser notifications, our provider stores a browser subscription token so we can send new-window alerts.
- Technical data — like most websites, our host records standard log data such as IP address, browser type and pages visited, for security and aggregate statistics.
- Cookie data — small identifiers described in our Cookie Notice.
We do not knowingly collect sensitive personal information, and we do not sell personal information to anyone.
3. Why we use it (purposes)
Under PIPEDA we identify our purposes before or at the time of collection. We use your information to:
- send the occasional lane letter and new-game notifications you asked for;
- respond to messages and game suggestions you send us;
- keep the site secure, working and free of abuse;
- understand, in aggregate, which little games readers enjoy most.
4. Consent
We rely on your meaningful consent. You give express consent by ticking the subscription box and submitting the form; nothing is pre-ticked. You may withdraw consent at any time (see section 8), and withdrawing will not affect the lawfulness of processing before then.
5. Who we share it with
We share personal information only with service providers who help us run the lane, and only as far as needed:
- OneSignal — our push-notification and email delivery provider, which processes your subscription token, name, email and phone to deliver the messages you opted into.
- Our web host and analytics — which process technical log data to serve and secure the site.
These providers may store data outside Canada (for example, in the United States). Where that happens, the information becomes subject to the laws of that jurisdiction, and we take reasonable steps to ensure a comparable level of protection through contractual safeguards.
6. How long we keep it
We retain newsletter details for as long as you remain subscribed, and delete them within a reasonable period after you unsubscribe. Technical logs are kept only as long as needed for security and statistics, then discarded or anonymised.
7. Safeguards
We protect personal information with security safeguards appropriate to its sensitivity, including encrypted (HTTPS) transmission, access controls, and reputable processors. No method of transmission over the internet is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information and review our practices regularly.
8. Your rights under PIPEDA
You have the right to:
- access the personal information we hold about you and know how it has been used and disclosed;
- request correction of inaccurate or incomplete information;
- withdraw consent and unsubscribe at any time (each letter includes a one-click unsubscribe link);
- ask questions or make a complaint about how we handle your information.
To exercise any of these rights, contact us using section 11. We will respond within a reasonable time, usually within 30 days.
9. Children
The lane is intended for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect their personal information; if you believe a child has subscribed, contact us and we will remove it.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as our practices or the law evolve. We will post the revised version here with a new "last updated" date, and material changes will be highlighted in the lane letter.
